Conhecer vs Saber
The difference is not what most people think. Most people would say the difference between conhecer and saber lies in their meaning.
By definition, saber in Portuguese means to own information, to know about something. On the other hand, Conhecer means to be familiar with, usually a person, place or thing.
Although that is true, most of the time, it’s grammatical.
Conhecer is followed by a noun
Conheces a minha irmã?
Do you know my sister?
Conheço Aveiro bem.
I know Aveiro well.
Saber is followed by a verb or a phrase (Subject Verb Object SVO)
Sabes quem é a minha irmã?
Do you know who my sister is?
Não sabemos o que aconteceu.
We don’t know what happened.
However, in certain cases, saber can be followed by a noun, if we’re talking about knowledge or something you remember or retain.
Eu não sei o nome dele.
I don’t know his name.
Eu sei tudo sobre a situação.
I know everything about the situation.
Saber also means can, to be able to if expresses knowledge or ability to do something.
Eu sei nadar.
I can swim (aka I know how to swim).
