Argh… prepositions. If I had a dollar for every time a student complained about those in class, I wouldn’t need to write this blog post, I’d already be rich! French prepositions are one of the most complex and intricate aspects of French grammar so I decided to take a bit of time to explain it to you in this post.

French Prepositions – List, Verbs, and Examples
The most important thing when learning prepositions, is to not translate them. I repeat, DO NOT TRANSLATE THEM. Instead, learn each verb individually with their preposition and corresponding meaning.
| Preposition | Verbs | Example Sentences |
| À | Aller à (to go), Penser à (to think), Parler à (to speak) | Je vais à la plage I am going to the beach. |
| De | Venir de (to come), Avoir de (to have), Parler de (to speak) | Je viens de France.I come from France. J’ai de l’argent sur moi. I have (some) money on me. |
| En | Aller en (to go), Habiter en (to live), Voyager en (to travel) | Je vais en France cet été I am going to France this summer. |
| Dans | Entrer dans (to enter), Habiter dans (to live), Partir dans (to leave), être dans (to be inside). | Les clés sont dans la boîte The keys are in the box. |
| Sur | Mettre sur (to put on), Écrire sur (to write), Marcher sur (to walk), être sur (to be on) | Le livre est sur la table The book is on the table. J’ai écris cette lettre sur du papier recyclé.I wrote this letter on recycled paper. |
| Sous | Mettre sous (to put under), être sous (to be under) | Le chat est sous la chaise The cat is under the chair. |
